Cryptid File 039A - Lusca

Location: Bahamas

Evidence: Sightings and attacks

Temperment: Aggressive

My thoughts and theories: The Lusca is creature said to inhabit the area of the Bahamas known as "The Blue Holes" [link] These Blue Holes are believed to hold a creature that combines the long tentacles of a octopus with the jaws of a shark. Other sightings claim it to be more of a eel-octopi combo. I have based my interpretation on the latter. The Lusca has been observed to pull the entire boats of fisherman down into the depths and devour the men on board, and then spew the wreckage back to the surface! Many thorize that this can be attributed to the coming and going of tides creating a vacuum effect within the blue holes, and the water that rushes back in pushes the boat's remains back to the surface. While this account for some accourences of the Lusca taking prey to it's watery grave, you can not as simply explain people being pulled from the shore into the waiting jaws of the beast....... I believe this creature to be a bizarre offshoot of the eel family that has developed tentacles like that of an octopus, but convergent evolution can only go so far, so I believe that suckers would not be something it would or could develop. With its largest arms it is easily able to wrap around small fishing boats, and snare victims on the shore in order to drag them into it's razor sharp teeth, or to swollow them whole. Another theory I have hypothasized is that the blue holes may be the dwelling place or hunting area of a nearby population of Giant Squid, the shark and eel features may be attributed to local superstition and fear.
