I have needed a new journal for quite awhile. Happy 2015 everyone!

Things are going as usual, nothing super major. Attempting to draw a bit more lately again... As usual lol. Since I last posted I have played through the entire "Souls" series. And let me say, these games are amazing! Even going so far as to do short write ups on the music alone: www.facebook.com/phillip.campa…

My history with Dark Souls is an interesting one to say the least. I originally had seen it for only $15 at our local Bi-mart, my dad was there and told him it would be a cheap easy gift for my upcoming birthday a couple years ago. I mostly wanted it to at try it out, or in the very least have it in my collection. Initially, he forgot the game was in his closet for later and I didn't receive it for that birthday (I had forgotten it as well lol). He ended up giving it to me later. I put it in as I bought the Artorias DLC for cheap and figured I might as well use it (Artorias is awesome). I played for a little while, not thinking it was quite as hard as it's reputation leads many to believe. And I played, up to the Capra Demon. And oddly enough this isn't what stopped me from playing as it does many who give up in the game's early stages. My PS3's blu ray drive died. I had to repair that (accidentally snapping the sensor wire at one point and having to order a new one of those too!). And by that time, God of War: Ascension came out and I left Dark Souls in my backlog as many games end up being (I still have Neir, AC: Rogue, Boktai 2 and now DMC in there, maybe a couple others I've forgotten) as new ones come out. I would joke that Dark Souls didn't just kill me, it killed my PS3! In reference to the replaced drive. But that was about it. Until the trailers for Dark Souls 2 started popping up. The images of the shrine surrounded by many flying dragons, diplocaulus based salamanders, mirror knights, and fiends made of conjoined corpses got my attention again. This is what got me playing the first again. And like that I was hooked once more. I returned to my DS1 save file to resume my journey. Capra Demon not withstanding, it was an easy transition back. Dark Souls is alot like Monster Hunter. There is alot of watching for openings, knowing that healing requires you to physically drink something and let that animation play out in it's entirety. Being a big MH fan, the learning curve of Dark Souls was almost non-existent. Despite the series' lack of a standard narrative, these games have deep lore that you have to seek out in item descriptions, or the odd character dialog. The world is a tragic one, many walk about as literal zombies without purpose. And those that do have it, are often soon to loose it. Even the bosses you fight, you may end up feeling sorry for afterward upon reading the description of their soul.

After finishing Dark Souls, I bought Demon's Souls, and after that, Dark Souls 2. All in all, playing through these games feels very rewarding once you finally achieve victory of an obstacle. I think this trailer sums it up nicely: [link]
Never give up. Hold onto your purpose. Fight till you have won, and keep going.

Don't let their reputation of being the "hardest thing ever" stop you from playing. They are hard no doubt, but still fair. You may get invaded, you may come up against a boss you don't think you can beat, but you can always rise again and again. For when you give up, you go hollow. Until then, you have not lost.

That all being said, I'm very much looking forward to Bloodborne. Which is essentially the next step for the series. Focusing more on action, and removing shields from combat entirely, you must think on your feet, and fight offensively in this new entry.

And lets not forget the re-release of Dark Souls 2

Hopefully I'll have more art this year everyone! Especially since I now have a new tablet pen.
