Description

Cryptid File 016E - New Jersey Devil

Location: Pine Barrens, New Jersey

Type: Demon like beast

Temperment: Depends who you ask, generally the attitude is "Don't go in the Pine Barrens, lest you have a death wish."

My thoughts and theories: The New Jersey Devil. A creature who haunts the Pine Barrens, a forested area covering 1.1 million acres. Within this dark territory lies many trails, swamps, and the old abandoned Leeds home..... The devil is said to have cloven feet, the wings of a bat, antlers of a deer, and the head of a horse. With glowing eyes hotter than hell, the Jersey Devil stalks the region searching for his next victim, grinding his teeth and reveling at the opportunity to tear human flesh from their bones, all whilist the victim is still alive..... Perched in a tree, the devil beats it's absolutely massive wings and takes off into the night sky, illuminated by the light of a full moon the beast descends upon livestock, taking them to the nearest resting place and quicly devouring them, leaving only bones that are cracked and drained for their marrow, and pools of blood for thier owners to stumble upon the macbre sights the next morning. The New Jersey Devil is tuly a cryptid to be feared even by the bravest souls....

*Shivers* Ok, I wrote that, and even I'm creeped out. Ok I may have embellished one or two details, but at least I got the point across. The New Jersey Devil is one of those creatures that makes you think if there is really something there, lurking within the previously mentioned 1.1 million acres of swamp and forest. I for one believe there is. Even before European settlers, the native Lenni Lenape americans reffered to the Pine Barrens as Popuessing, which ruoghly means "Place of the Dragon". As if this weren't enough, Swedish explorers reffered to the area as "Drake Kill", which obviously gets the point across as the area being inhabited by a dragon like creature.

There are multiple origins for this elusive cryptid. The native americans believed the creature to be protector of the forest and it's creatures. But the most popular origin is that of Mother Leeds who bore 12 children and cursed the 13th to be a devil. Her wish came came true as the child transformed into a being of pure evil. Another version says the child's father was the devil himself. But to me, they are all hogwash. Other theories included that the Jersey devil is really am undiscovered bat, or a relict population of dimorphodon or other type of pterosaur. It is also theorized that the devil is some type of dragon.

I for one believe that the devil may be a undiscovered species of mammal that has evolved reptilian-esque features. As a predatory creature, it does not have any use for hooves, instead it may curl its claws into a vaguely hoof like fashion when when flight or when genneraly walking, only unfulring them when diving in for an aerial attack on creatures such as livestock. The horns are most likely only found in males to be used in head butting which causes minimal damage during disputes and/ or attracting mates.

I for one believe that if face our fears and venture ever deeper into the Barrens, we will find what exactly these creatures are. And put to rest the supernatural tales that surround them.

File End.

or... it could be a mutation, that might explain the most popular origin of Jersey Devil.
